Founded by Kristian Byrge and Peter Bonnen, Muuto strives to expand the Scandinavian design tradition with new and original perspectives. With a strong focus on the concept of change and innovation, it comes as no surprised the name Muuto, was inspired by the Finnish word muutos, means ‘new perspectives’. Tired of only seeing reinterpretations of existing designs, Muuto tasked architects and designers, exclusively from Nordic countries, to design pieces with the goal of ushering in a “great new era of Scandinavian design.” They began by offering a range of affordable home accessories and lighting designs, which eventually grew to include a range of furniture pieces, all of which meet the highest set of standards without compromising quality or design.
Following the Scandinavian design mentality, the foundation of all Muuto products is a focus on quality, details and functionality. However, Muuto believes in taking this a step further by employing expert craftsmanship accompanied by a no-nonsense, no-flashiness approach with the incorporation of innovative materials, colours and a touch of self-expression.
To Muuto good design starts with the person. Muuto handpicks the brightest design talent in Scandinavia and gives them the freedom to express their individual story by encouraging experimentation. The result is a new and unique take on common everyday objects. Some want to alter the world, others find passion in colour and shape or draw deeply from personal experience. How do they see a chair, vase, lamp or any other everyday product?
You will know Muuto design because it has muutos. By continuing the Scandinavian tradition of creating pieces of quality and detail whilst focusing on functionality and aesthetics, Muuto aims to not only pay homage but further develop their design heritage by adding their own new chapter, New Nordic.
